Meet Sarah:

Artist Biography:

Sarah Houglum is a contemporary watercolor artist known for her vibrant, coastal inspired paintings that capture the energy, color, and rhythm of a life lived on the coasts of California, Hawaii and now Florida. Sarah moved from Maui, Hawaii to Vero Beach, FL last year to be close to her family.

After experiencing the devastating 2023 fire that destroyed Lahaina, Hawaii, Sarah was inspired by the community that came together for a celebration of life or “Paddle Out” honoring those families, history and businesses lost in the fire.  Sarah’s “Paddle Out” painting series and aerial views of beaches translate from coast to coast wherever surfers surf and waves break.

Working beyond traditional watercolor boundaries, Sarah seals each painting using professional archival varnish to protect the pigments and ensure longevity. A final hand-applied cold wax layer creates a soft velvet surface with subtle depth, lending the work a refined, contemporary presence that elevates the watercolor into a durable, collectible form. This technique not only preserves the integrity of the watercolor but also adds a modern, luminous finish that enhances depth and texture - bridging the gap between traditional watercolor and contemporary mixed media.

Through her art, Sarah aims to celebrate the beauty and the simple pleasures of seaside living.

"Watercolor lets me capture the feeling of a moment — the way sunlight dances on the ocean or how a breeze moves through palm leaves. "
